Levodopa, antiparkinson's drug, needs to be activated to dopamine after crossing the blood-brain barrier peripheral conversion to dopamine results in many side effecs. The gut microbiota mainly Enterococcus faecalis can metabolize levodopa peripherally. Enterococcus faecalis metabolizes levodopa by a pyridoxal phosphate-dependent tyrosine decarboxylase to dopamine.
