Azo bounded is a group of antibiotics (mesalazine-sulfasalazine, balsalazide, and olsalazine) mainly used to treat ulcerative colitis. Azo bounded are prodrugs relying mainly on the human colonic microbiome in its activation. Azoreductase is an enzyme found mainly in the anaerobic bacteria responsible for azo-bounded activation. this enzyme is more predominant in the genus clostridium.
