Sulfanilamide is an antibiotic prodrug that needs to be activated by the azo-reductase enzymes by the gut microbiota. In vitro experiment, incubating stools sample suspension directly with sulfanilamide shows that the high abundance of firmicutes in stool samples correlated with high azo-reducing activity, unlike Bacteroides which correlated with a low level of azoreductase activity.
