How Bugs Modulate Drugs?

Launched on 11/11/11; Current Release 1.5 (21 Mar 2021): Spring of Hope! (Release History)

Detailed View

Summary Gut microbes (phylum: Firmicutes) increase sulfanilamide's bioavailability.
sulfanilamide (PubChem CID: 5333)
Firmicutes (Tax ID: 1239)
increase bioavailability
Sulfanilamide is an antibiotic prodrug that needs to be activated by the azo-reductase enzymes by the gut microbiota. In vitro experiment, incubating stools sample suspension directly with sulfanilamide shows that the high abundance of firmicutes in stool samples correlated with high azo-reducing activity, unlike Bacteroides which correlated with a low level of azoreductase activity.
