Berberine is an antimicrobial that inhibits the assembly function of FtsZ, thus halting the bacterial cell division. It is used to treat bacterial diarrhea and has also been found to lower blood glucose level. It is hypothesized that, through its antimicrobial activity, berberine modulates the gut microbiota in a way that leads to its antidiabetic effect.
