affect methylation
Human colon microorganisms are capable of actively metabolizing arsenic into methylated arsenicals and thioarsenicals. Both monomethylarsonic acid (MMAV) and the highly toxic monomethylarsonous acid (MMAIII) could be detected upon in vitro culture of human colon microbiota with inorganic arsenic. These findings suggest a presystemic arsenic metabolism in the human body.
