affect uptake
In rats, the influence of gut bacteria on ammonia production from glutamine might be negligible under the experimental conditions used (germ-free rats). Elimination of the aerobic microorganisms results in a small decrease of ammonia concentration in portal blood, in contrast to elimination of the anaerobic microorganisms, which leads to an excessive reduction of ammonia formation. This reduction is most likely through interference with glutamine uptake in mucosal cells, but not necessarily exclusively explained by alterations of the intestinal microbiota.
