Oral administration of the antibiotic erythromycin was suggested to increase digoxin toxicity, which was coupled with reduction in digoxin reduction products (DRP) in urine. This finding (Lindenbaum et al. 1981) supported the hypothesis that variable component of the intestinal microbiota are involved in forming DRP.
