affect reduction
The gut microbiota is central to the metabolism of zonisamide through a reduction reaction that produces 2-sulfomoyacetylphenol. When the level of this metabolite was measured in conventional rats and germ-free rats, germ-free rats showed lower levels. This was further confirmed as the the levels of 2-sulfomoyacetylphenol increased upon re-inoculation of the germ-free rats with gut microbiota.
