Fluoxetine was shown to be mainly eliminated through biodegradation. A study compared the biodegradation potential of three degrading microbial consortia: an ammonium-nitrite-oxidizing consortium, a nitrite-oxidizing consortium, and a heterotrophic consortium. The heterotrophic consortium showed the highest ability (85%) to biodegrade fluoxetine, followed by the ammonium-nitrite-oxidizing consortium (79%). On the other hand, the nitrite-oxidizing consortium had the lowest biodegradation ability (< 48%). |
