increase toxicity
Gut bacteria metabolize L-tryptophan into many products, including the antioxidant indole-3-propionic acid, the neurotransmitter tryptamine, and indole. Hydroxylation and sulfation of indole by hepatic enzymes generate the uremic toxin indoxyl sulfate.
