increase bioavailability
Gut microbes metabolize berberine (a plant-derived benzoisoquinoline alkaloid), allowing its intestinal absorption. It was found that nitroreductases of the gut microbiota convert BBR into dihydroberberine (dhBBR), which has an intestinal absorption rate 5-fold that of BBR in animals.
